“Software should be grown, not built.” — Alan Kay

There’s something deeply resonant about this idea. Our brand is rooted in the metaphor of seeds growing into forests of knowledge. It feels natural, almost inevitable, to extend that same metaphor to the software we create. Not as static artifacts, but as living systems—evolving, adapting, and expanding over time.

And yet, something doesn’t quite sit right.

If I’m honest, we haven’t been growing software. We’ve been building it.

Constructing it piece by piece. Designing it upfront. Assembling it into something that works—but perhaps doesn’t live.

So what does it actually mean to grow software?

It likely means shifting from control to cultivation.
From defining everything in advance to enabling things to emerge.
From rigid structures to systems that can evolve with their users.

The real question for us is:

What would need to change—for us to start growing instead of building?
